Do you know what to do in an emergency situation? Could you help a friend, a family member, or even your child if they had an accident or were suddenly ill?
It’s so important to have good first aid skills, and even more so when you have children. It’s a skill that can quite literally be life changing.
So I’m very excited to be chatting to Nataly Tormey this week. Nataly is the founder of WONDERWOMAN Children and Family First Aid.
Tell us a bit about WONDERWOMAN Children?
WONDERWOMAN Children are Australia’s specialists in community First Aid Education for parents, carers and children. It is our mission that each person caring for a child has access to affordable first aid education and each child is cared for by someone who knows what to do in an emergency.
It is also our passion to teach children the basic skills of first aid, and give them the confidence to help family or friends in need, in a fun and friendly way!
What’s your background?
I come from a first aid and nursing background. However, I very much respect that First Aid and Education is a discipline of its own.
At Family First Aid, we teach people the guidelines of the Australian Resuscitation Council. All our educators are up to date on community First Aid. We are also obsessed with adult and children’s education and how we can send a message that anyone can understand and absorb.
Tell us a bit about you and your expertise.
I was a First Aid Educator before to becoming a nurse. During my degree, I had the opportunity to teach first aid and it became a passion of mine. It is so important that first aid education is relevant for families and for children.
In addition to this, I have a strong interest in mental health for families. I’m a facilitator of Tuning into Kids, a program for emotional coaching for families.
How did you come to start WONDERWOMAN Children?
I spent many years working under the wings of Australia’s most reputable First Aid Companies, and one day decided to try running a program for families.
I put up a post on a local page to ‘dip my toes in’ and got a response from one mother. This mother had bought home a child that was unwell, and only 8 weeks old. As if becoming a mother isn’t hard enough, she was also struggling with lack of support, and a lack of knowledge of what to do when her child was sick. She responded to my ad, and I was able to provide her with affordable first aid education.
I ran the course for her and her family and the feedback was amazing. I also learned that there are no publicly funded first aid course. The courses run by private businesses were not affordable to most families.
So here we are! There’s no funding for free courses (YET!), but we’re here and thanks to our sponsors, we’re able to offer affordable first aid education for parents and children.
Who should do a Family First Aid course, and where you can find one?
Our Family First Aid courses and courses for children are run Australia wide. We run public family first aid courses at local YMCA and community venues, and also run private in home first aid sessions.
What’s coming up for WONDERWOMAN Children in 2017?
So much is happening! We are welcoming more educators across Australia, which means more affordable access to all families. We are also officially launching Toby the Teddy does First Aid, an incursion program for early learning programs teaching children first aid.
And excitingly…….. We are launching My First Aid Kit. A kit that is full of first aid products from sponsors that parents will actually use, and 100% of profit will be used to provide free courses to families in need and families who have a child experiencing chronic illness.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
My guilty pleasure, well for me it is always work! I love to work on WONDERWOMAN Children and find myself promising my family and friends to take a break, and then sneaking off to work on our projects! Obviously with wine and chocolate in hand!
What’s something that’s guaranteed to bring a smile to your face?
Success to our business and my children!
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
Life has been a tough road, being raised in poverty, quitting school to become a beauty therapist at 15, moving out of home at the same time and then suddenly deciding to finish VCE! While living out of home I was studying during the day at TAFE and working as a bar girl at a strip club at night to support my self!
What are you watching, reading or listening to at the moment?
I wish I was reading, but I can’t read more than one page before wanting to doze off! I am loving the hot vampires on The Originals! Shh!
Thanks so much, Nataly, for taking the time to chat with us. We wish you all the very best with your inspiring work with WONDERWOMAN Children.
