Little Tyro was created by a Melbourne based primary school teacher, Louise Hedley. The name Tyro comes from Latin, meaning a ‘beginner in learning’. This is exactly what Little Tyro is aimed at – preschoolers who are just beginning their exciting journeys into the wonderful worlds of literacy and numeracy.
Louise is a primary teacher who has combined classroom teaching with the roles of Literacy co-ordinator, reading recovery teacher and as a mentor to other teachers and teachers in training at university. With two boys of her own, it’s clear that developing literacy and numeracy skills in primary and pre-primary children is her passion, and it’s easy to see this passion in the wonderful range of toys from Little Tyro.
Louise has designed a range of fun games and activities that are work on the idea of play-based education. Children are much more open to learning if they don’t think they’re being taught! All the toys are stylish and engaging, yet they have been specifically designed to support key Literacy and Numeracy School Curriculum Objectives of all the Australian states.
The Little Tyro range of educational games will help build pre-schoolers confidence and prepare them for school, through games like the Pre-Writing Patterning Cards that start children drawing in patterns that get them ready for writing. Each toy targets a specific need, such as alphabet skills or or basic time concepts, but we especially love the Literacy Essentials Packs and the Numeracy Essentials Packs. Each comes in a gorgeous little suitcase with a whole bunch of fun, educational activities.
They’re also an excellent way to support children during their early school years, and to keep them from sliding back during the summer holidays!
